We spoke with Ecoprint&#8217;s product development technologist about what his job involves, the most common <a href=\"https:\/\/ecoprint.ee\/en\/how-to-design-packaging-that-is-both-attractive-and-eco-friendly\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/ecoprint.ee\/en\/how-to-design-packaging-that-is-both-attractive-and-eco-friendly\/\">design mistakes<\/a>, and how to reach a result that actually works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who is a product development technologist and what does he do on a daily basis?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My main task is to come up with <a href=\"https:\/\/ecoprint.ee\/en\/portfolio-works\/\" type=\"page\" id=\"22510\">packaging ideas<\/a> based on customer needs and find functional technical solutions for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every workday is different, but broadly speaking, they can be divided into two. There are simpler days when I deal with standard boxes, and more complex ones where I develop completely new solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of my working time is spent thinking through solutions. I visualize possible options in my mind and then try to execute them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When a client or designer comes to you with an idea, what is the first thing you look at?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When a client comes with an idea, I look at it as a whole and assess its suitability. Key elements are structural performance, correctly chosen material, and our company&#8217;s production capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ecoprint.ee\/en\/developing-a-new-package-what-to-consider\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"27821\">The process <\/a>consists of these main steps:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Creating the structure: I start by creating or editing the structure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Quote and prototype: We provide the client with a quote, and if accepted, I prepare <a href=\"https:\/\/ecoprint.ee\/en\/packaging-technical-solutions-and-prototyping\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"26840\">prototypes<\/a> if needed. For more complex projects, going back and forth at this stage can take longer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Applying the design: After approving the structure, we send the technical drawing to the client and wait for the graphic design.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prepress and production: From there, the job moves first to the prepress department and only then to production.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the most common mistakes you see in designs?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the graphic design side, we sometimes see that bleed has not been accounted for. Possible small variations in production can change the overall look of the package in that case. Generally, this does not reach production, as <a href=\"https:\/\/ecoprint.ee\/en\/printing-information\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/ecoprint.ee\/en\/printing-information\/\">the prepress department<\/a> will make these corrections themselves or ask for a corrected design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Secondly, failure to account for blind spots can be highlighted \u2014 these are packaging details that remain hidden once assembled. We also keep an eye on this and make corrections as needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In technical design, a classic mistake is ignoring the glue flap, where the last panel on the box is designed to be as wide as the others. This creates a situation where one edge of the assembled box protrudes slightly. Visually it is not appealing and can cause handling issues with the packaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do you find a balance between what looks good and what is actually manufacturable?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All ideas need <a href=\"https:\/\/ecoprint.ee\/en\/how-to-choose-the-right-packaging-for-e-commerce-or-retail\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"27852\">a functional technical solution<\/a>. During product development, it becomes clear whether an idea is feasible in a way that suits the client while remaining technically viable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every project is different, there are infinite structures, and you cannot do everything strictly &#8220;by the book.&#8221; Seemingly strange ideas can instead turn into unique solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What has changed the most in packaging production over the last few years?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Increasing customer environmental awareness stands out more and more. This is naturally influenced by stricter <a href=\"https:\/\/ecoprint.ee\/en\/packaging-waste-regulation-ppwr\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"29820\">EU packaging laws<\/a>. Whenever possible, companies try to find environmentally friendly alternatives to plastic packaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Summary<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A product development technologist ensures that your vision becomes a functional and durable package on the store shelf.
